Friday 29th April - Millipedes are Artists

This week Millipedes have been very arty in class. We have learnt about the incredible artist Tom Yendall, who has not got arms so he paints with his mouth and feet. We looked at some of Tom Yendall’s art work and tried to recreate some of his paintings outside. We also learnt how to use powder paint properly and mixed primary colours to make secondary colours.

The book we focused on this week was ‘Katie’s picture show’. Katie visited an art gallery with her granny and climbed into all the paintings. We made our own pictures where we had ‘climbed’ into the paintings and the children chose what they wanted their paintings to look like.

Ahead of our trip to the art gallery we went out to the Sensory Garden and we used natural resources to make a portrait of ourselves. We then continued our learning about portraits when we visited the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. The children were taught how to draw their faces, they looked mirrors to identify their features before drawing their masterpieces. In the Art Gallery we had time to look at the different painting and some of the children even got to dress up as some of the paintings.

In Maths this week we have been looking at numbers over ten and we have been using 10 frames and numicon to understand that numbers 11-19 are 10 and some more. We built a numicon sky scraper scene where the children had to work out what they needed to add to the 10 to make the building.

In our Outside provision this week we have introduced a new sand pit which the children really enjoy using. We have also been using the water trays to look at floating and sinking, the children chose the items they wanted to test before writing down on their clipboard whether it had floated or sunk.

What another fabulous week and a brilliant start to Term 5. Well done Millipedes.
