Scientists!

In Science this week we started our topic by observing living things. The children looked at the school chickens and a hamster. We discussed what we know about living things and what they need to stay alive.

There are 7 life processes:

Movement

Respiration (breathing)

Sensing

Growth

Reproduction

Excretion (getting rid of waste)

Nutrition (getting energy from food)

The children enjoyed observing some living things that we don't usually see up close. The children were very lucky to observe Miss Salmon's mum's pet tortoise, Speedy! The children were great at thinking Scientifically and asking great questions. (Eg

CV "Speedy carry's his home on his back, why is it's shell brown?"

CV "Was Speedy born or did he hatch from an egg?"

CV "What is Speedy's habitat?"

CV "The shell is hard so Speedy can hide from predators."

The children had the opportunity to hold speedy and feel his shell, legs and head. They were surprised by the textures and strength of Speedy's shell.
