Meerkats and Science.

The marvellous Meerkats have worked so hard this week and have filled their gem jar, so their reward was extra playtime today!  This was their first week with Mrs Hughes and she was very impressed with them all – welcome to the team Mrs Hughes.

Thank you to all the parents who came to the RWI workshop and then joined us in class for ‘speed sounds’ session and a Talk Through story.   The RWI blog has lots of helpful links to support your child’s reading at home so please do give it a look.  If you are unsure of your child’s RWI groups please do just ask one of the Meerkat Class team.   Here’s this week’s blog https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-19th-January-2023/

In English, the children wrote their own version of the ‘The three little wolves and the big bad pig’.  There were some great variations with sharks and fish, ducks and foxes, kittens and dogs and zebras and lions.  It is great to see the children developing a love of writing and using their learning from RWI to produce such fantastic pieces of writing. Some children took their work to show Mrs Newbury and she was very impressed – you can read their stories in the pictures. Here’s the link to the book so you can share it at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coWeTT-eOOI  We will be starting a new book next week to inspire us in our writing.

In maths, the Year 1 children have been using number lines to add, subtract numbers and find missing numbers.  It is always great to see them working so well with their partners and exploring the numbers and explaining their answers.  The Year 2 children have been grouping and sharing amounts to develop their understanding of multiplication and division.

It’s been quite a scientific week with lots of practical hands on experiments.  At the start of the week the children took their learning outside and tested different materials to see which material would be best for a school uniform.  First, they looked at different materials, then they made a prediction.  Once this was done, they tested the materials and recorded their results before finally making a conclusion.  Yesterday, the children drew upon what they had learnt throughout the topic and when faced with 5 bags of materials, they had to use their knowledge as a team to work out which materials were in each bag.  The children demonstrated fantastic teamwork throughout and identified all the materials correctly– well done Meerkats.

In PE we practised star, side, tuck and standing jumps with equipment.  The children worked around a carousel of skipping ropes, hoops and balls to create the different jumps.  As the pictures show, it was very energetic – some pictures are a bit blurry as the children were jumping so fast!

Outdoor PE on Monday and indoor PE on Wednesday.  Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on these days.

  • A plain white t-shirt
  • Black shorts / joggers for outdoor PE
  • Children can wear their school sweatshirt or cardigan
  • Plimsolls (daps)

Next week, I will be in class all week along with Ms Smith, our amazing TA.

Wishing you all a cosy weekend.
