Plants and Beanstalks!

It was so lovely to see all the children dressed in red today in support of Red Nose Day.  What a fabulous bunch of red Meerkats they made!!  In case, any of you missed it the marvellous Meerkats made it into the press last week in ‘The White Horse News’ with their World Book Day picture.  I’ve included the picture along with our class pictures from this week.

It was all about plants and beanstalks this week in Meerkat Class.  What fun we have had learning all about Jim and the Giant in ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’ by Raymond Briggs.  The children have looked at similarities and differences to its prequel ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and looked at other ways in which they could help the Giant just like Jim.  We’ve even sang a song all about the story.  Here’s the link to the story if you wish to share it at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMaMNpod3Es

Maths was all about position and direction.  The children used lots of resources to physically move objects into new positions and use their maths vocabulary to describe moving objects to the left and right of a starting position.  The Year 2 children looked at, and moved themselves and objects clockwise and anticlockwise, describing the turns; ¼, ½. ¾ and full turn. The also continued patterns and created their own.

We were very fortunate to have a visitor to join us on Wednesday to support and bring our Science learning to life.  Jackie, a gardener from a local garden centre, joined us with a selection of her plants grown from bulbs and seeds.  She showed the children the different parts of a plant and explained what they need to grow.  The children saw seedling of peppers, aubergines, and leeks alongside flowers such as, sweet peas and daffodils.  Following the visit, the children conducted an experiment of their own.  They have put cress seeds into containers, some with water, some will have light and some will have noting and some with both light and water.  We will monitor to see if they grow.  The children have made some predictions and we will now wait and see what happens.

The sunflower seeds which were planted in class the other week have now all gone home.  I am happy for you to send pictures of them as they grow, to the class email, and we will see just how tall they grow!

In PE, we have continued practising our tennis skills.  This week the children worked really hard to balance and control the ball, they then moved it along the ground with the forehand and backhand stroke.  There were lots of concentration on faces whilst they practised. Well done Meerkats for showing such perseverance!!

We made tally charts using the attribute of colour in Computing.  The children used the classroom to spot all the red, blue, green and yellow objects before we combined the results to create a pictogram.

Thank you for continuing to support your child with their reading and phonics.  Please see the RWI blog  https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-15th-March-2024/ to access videos which you can watch at home.

The weather has turned very cold and wet again this week, please ensure that your child has a warm and waterproof coat in school every day.  We go outside for all playtimes unless the weather is very wet.  Also, the children do not wear their outdoor shoes in class so please do send in slippers to keep those little feet nice and toasty.

Thank you to all who have signed up for Parents Evening next week.  I am really looking forward to sharing your child’s wonderful learning with you.

Easter Church Service

We will be having our Easter service on Friday 22nd March 2pm at All Saints church. Due to limited space in the church, we are only inviting parents and carers of Y2 children and Bumblebee class children to join us for this occasion to attend the service. Children of those who attend the service can be collected after the service at the church and everyone else will be brought back to school to be collected at normal time. If for any reason you do not want your child to go to the church service, please speak to me or drop an email to the class email.

Next week, I will be in class Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday with Mrs Hughes taking Meerkat Class all day Monday and Wednesday morning.  Ms Smith, our amazing TA will be with the class all week.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend 😊
