A definite buzz around the classroom...

I can’t quite believe that we’ve reached the end of the first week of July.  It will soon be time for the brilliant Beetles to spread their wings and fly but I know that they are ready for the new adventures ahead!

We have had a great week with lots of practical exploration and learning.  In maths, we have been learning about position and direction.  We had to listen carefully to our partners instructions and follow them to make identical towers.  We then took our learning outside and gave and followed directional instructions.  We have also looked at clockwise and anti-clockwise and the children dipped into their ‘back brain’ using previous fraction and time knowledge to support new learning.

In preparations for making our cars in DT, we looked at axles and wheel sizes.  The children made a variety of axles and tested them to see how far they could travel and if they went in a straight line.  We found out that different sized wheels meant that our car would go around in a circle and not travel in a straight line!  We also designed our cars.  The children gave 3D drawing a go and produced fantastic designs.  We are very excited about making our cars next week.

We have begun practising for sports day and the children’s teamwork skills have again been evident.  It is so lovely to hear them encouraging and supporting each other.  Sports Day Friday 14th July 10am at the Junior School.  Children to wear their PE to school on Friday.

There was a definite buzz around the classroom on Friday during computing.  The children successfully created a fly on the ‘Scratch’ programme.  They programmed the fly so that it moved in a realistic way and then added a background and sounds before looping the programme to have the fly move in a continuous way.  The children then created a butterfly, snake and bunny.

We were so proud of the children when we attended the special event at the Juniors to watch the Bratton Silver Band this week.  It was great that so many of you were able to join us.  Your support at these events is always appreciated – thank you.

The music theme continued in class as we practised playing our ocarinas in preparation for the graduation event.  The children have worked so hard learning this new instrument and are really coming together as a group.  Inspired by watching the band, the whole of the year group practised together on Friday.  We were so impressed hearing them play in tune and in time with each other.

New books go home every Friday, please keep reading with your child each day, the reading books issued support the words and sounds that your child is learning in RWI that week.  Also, we are fortunate to have additional adults in school to listen to the children read, as well as the class team, so please can you check that your child is bringing their reading book and journal to school every day.  Additional resources to support your child and their reading can be found on the RWI blog https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-7th-July-2023/

Next week, Mrs Jeffery will be in class Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with Mrs Rockey taking Beetle class on Friday.

Wishing you all a very happy and relaxing weekend!

Mrs Jeffery, Mrs Rockey, Miss Smith and Mrs Ball.
