Amazing Colourful Meerkats!
We have been super busy this week in Meerkat Class as we reached the middle point of the term. The highlight was the very important visit the Year 2 children had on Tuesday when they visited the Juniors and met their new teachers. As I told the children, their new teachers are so very lucky to have them joining their classes and they are all definitely ready for the new adventures ahead.
Music continues to be a favourite at the moment, and on Monday we first listened to a piece of music before choosing instruments to play along to the music. Our orchestra had tambourines, shakers, maracas, blocks and a drum. We then listened to some music and thought about how it made us feel before watching the underwater video which accompanied the music. They are such a musical bunch!
In English, we created a fact file all about the Great Fire of London. The children wrote about the causes of the fire, the things done to try to stop it and the damage it caused. It has been wonderful to read their illustrated fact files. They concentrated on fact-based sentences with a focus on capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Myself and Miss Smith were very impressed, some children even took their completed work to Mrs Newbury!
We have been learning all about mass (weight) in maths this week and the children started by using the balance scales and cubes to measure objects around the classroom. We then looked at gram and kilogram weights before reading and recording the weights of objects on scales.
In history we have taken on the role of historians. We know about the Great Fire of London from our English work but we are now finding out how we know what happened and what we can use (sources – not to be confused with sauces, but it was good to check new vocabulary – well done for asking Meerkats) to help us find out more. We created a human time line to order the events before using the loose parts to create London and explain why and how the fire spread so quickly.
We joined Leopard Class for PE on Monday and had great fun practising our throwing and receiving skills alongside target practice. However, the highlight of the week was the colour run on Friday afternoon. The children started off running through the rainbow parachute before running, jogging and walking around the course. The did so well, some running as a team, others going for personal bests! Well done and thank you for all the sponsorship money raised.
As the weather forecast next week is for more sunshine, please remember to send a sunhat in with your child each day. There is no need to send in water bottles, the children can access water in class throughout the day and are encouraged to do so.
Next week I will be in class Monday to Thursday and Mrs Rous will be teaching the Meerkats on Friday. Our wonderful TA, Miss Smith will be with the children every day.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
