An Exciting Term

Hello everyone. This is my first blog as Ladybirds class teacher and we have had a very busy week with new topics for both Year 1s (Geography) and Year 2s (Science) as well as in Maths.

In Maths, Year 2 children have been learning about money and have been thinking about all the different ways pounds and pence can be added together. They have been enjoying looking at coins in the classroom and experimenting with all the different ways they can be combined. Year 1 pupils have been looking at numbers to 20, thinking about how tens and ones can be combined. We have been making number tracks and playing games with the numbers.

In Science the Year 2s have started our topic on Materials with a walk around the school exploring how many different materials we can find and looking at how they have been used. We have thought about their properties and have investigated how different materials can be changed. We enjoyed listening to a song to help us to remember the different types of materials – you might want to listen to it too…

Year 2 also had a visit from Mrs Mitchell to speak about her job as a nurse. This will lead into our topic on Florence Nightingale later in the term. The children enjoyed listening to her and asked some brilliant questions. Thank you Mrs Mitchell for a fascinating introduction to our topic.

The Year 1s have been enjoying travelling with Paddington to explore the four countries of the United Kingdom at the start of our Geography topic. We have looked at our country as a whole and have produced some fantastic work on England and Scotland before we move onto Wales and Northern Ireland next week. We have enjoyed looking at the capital cities, the patron saints, flowers and the buildings and other landmarks that can be found in each country.

In PE, the children worked with Mrs Ibbeken on Thursday to develop a sequence for a dance. They explored both standing and floor poses before thinking how they could join these with different methods of travel.

In computing, the Year 1s have loved programming the Beebots to move in specific ways before tackling a race track. They worked brilliantly in teams and have been eager to share what they know. The Year 2s have been working on how data and sensors are used in the International Space Station to give the astronauts everything they need to live

Some of the children have changed RWI groups so reading books may have gone home on a different day this week. Please could you make sure that you continue to listed to your child read every day and please ensure that reading journals and reading books are in school every day.

PE continues to be taught on Thursday so your child will need to come to school in their PE kit on that day. Please could homework books be in school next week so that I can put Knowledge Organisers in everyone’s book. Thank you.

Have a fantastic weekend and see you on Monday.
