Books, Cars and Ocarinas!

Well this week has just flown by!  The children spent two afternoons with their new teacher at Westbury Juniors and it was great today to hear them tell me all about it.  I heard what they did, who they met and to hear the excitement in their voices when they spoke about the visits tells me they are certainly ready for the new adventures ahead.

Back in class, we continued with our maths learning about ‘Mass, Capacity and Temperature’.  We shared the story ‘Equal Shmequal’ about a bear and a mouse who had to balance the see-saw.  We then had our own challenge to solve of balancing the scales with the wild animals of Kenya.  The children worked fantastically in their groups, swapping animals in and out of the baskets until they balanced.  It wasn’t as simple as dividing the animals into 2 equal groups, they had to divide them into equally weighted groups.  After lots of trial and error, we had success and the scales balanced!  Here’s the link so you can share the story at home too.

We started out new DT Topic of ‘Cars’ this week.  Building on from what we learnt during History and at the Haynes Motor Museum we are now looking at the structure of cars in preparation for making our own car models later on in the term.  We all went out to the carpark to have a look at the features that we might add to our own models. The children were all able to tell me all the parts of the cars and what their function is.

In Music, we have learnt and practiced individual notes and we are now learning how to play a well-known tune on our ocarinas.  The children have worked so hard to play as a group, a real skill especially when we are still learning how to play the instrument.  Well done musical Beetles!

Beetle Class love reading and sharing books and this week we had some time to just sit, share and enjoy books together.  It is so lovely to see the children’s love of reading shared with their friends.

As it was cooler this afternoon, we took the opportunity to go outside and have some time skipping.  The children’s stamina and agility skills have really improved and as the pictures show – what an energetic bunch the Beetles are.

Please keep reading with our child each day and please can you check that your child is bringing their reading book and journal to school each day as we are fortunate to have additional adults in school to listen to the children read.  Also, additional resources to support your child and their reading can be found on the RWI blog https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-30th-June-2023/

Next week, Mrs Jeffery will be in class Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with Mrs Rockey taking Beetle class on Tuesday.

Wishing you all a very happy and relaxing weekend!

Mrs Jeffery, Mrs Rockey, Miss Smith and Mrs Ball.
