Busy Brilliant Beetles!

The brilliant Beetles have certainly been growing their brains this week!  All have jumped enthusiastically into our new Maths and Science topics.

In Maths, our new topic is ‘shape’ and the children have been exploring 2-D and 3-D shapes and their properties.  We went to the library on a shape hunt and found shapes everywhere, including on the celling!  We have used straws to make shapes and count sides and vertices.   The children even brought symmetry to life with an array of poses.  It has been wonderful to hear the children use mathematical vocabulary to explain their findings.

Our Science topic is ‘Who lives on earth and how they survive.’  The children have looked at animals and their babies.  Identifying that some are born and some hatch from an egg, some look like their parents and some don’t.  We enjoyed sharing ‘The monkey puzzle’ book by Julia Donaldson.  The book tells the story of a monkey looking for his mum, being helped by a butterfly who doesn’t realise that the monkey looks like his mum as none of her babies look like her.  We have also looked at the stages of life, what needs we have at each stage and what we can do at the various stages.  We had great fun acting out the life stages.

We have been looking at acts of kindness told through bible stories in RE and this week we had a visit from Rev. Holly.  The children had many questions to ask her and during her visit they all received a kindness stone.

In PE we continued with our partner work, incorporating tricky balance sequences and teamwork. The children showed great respect when they watched each other’s sequences and gave feedback.  We also enjoyed a game of ‘stuck in the mud’ linking to our Life Skills lesson on teamwork and cooperation to ensure no one is left out.

We received our new book this week ‘The River’ by Tom Percival.  We are all looking forward to sharing it during story time.

Some sketch books went home by mistake after our trip to The Holbourne Museum. If you child has their sketch book at home could you please return it to school.  Many thanks.

Just a small reminder, all children need a coat and slippers in school, especially as the weather is getting wet and colder.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!
