Diaries and materials!
We have had another fantastic, busy week in Zebra Class and there has been lots of hard work occurring!
In English, the children have been writing their own diaries from a character's view point, based on the text 'Fire Cat'. The children have travelled back in time in their minds to 1666 when the Great Fire of London happened. The children have had to write in the first person tense and have managed to include lots of features of brilliant diary writing. You can see some examples in the photo gallery below.
In Maths, we have continued to learn to tell the time. This week we have focused on quarter past and quarter to times. It would be great if you could continue to help your child learn to tell the time at any opportunity at home.
In topic, we have been thinking about the properties of materials and why some materials are more suitable than others for a particular purpose. For example, a glass hammer might not be the best idea! The children have used some excellent scientific vocabulary to describe different materials, including absorbent, opaque, rigid, flexible and transparent. We have also explored how a material can exist in different states. Water can be a liquid, solid ice or a vapour and it can be hot or cold!
The children had great fun in PE, starting to learn some of the skills of net/ wall games. We thought about how to stand in the 'ready position' which will prove helpful in games such as tennis.
The class have now started joining their new class every day at story time. They have been looking forward to this each day and have all returned with gigantic smiles upon their faces. This transition will continue every day throughout Term 6 to really help the children prepare for the change and to start to form some friendships with other children who will be in their new class.
Next week we will be going on our school trip to Lacock, looking at the style of houses. These are similar to those that were in the London at the time of the great fire. The children will need to have their school jumper, comfy trousers and shoes. A small bag is handy for them to carry their lunch in. We will be leaving just after the register at 9.05 and returning in time for the end of school. It is going to be a wonderful day :-)
Reminders for next week:
