Friday 10th June

This week we started our new topic ‘At the Seaside’. The children have enjoyed using the large sandpit in the outside area that was recently filled with lots more sand so it feels like the children are at the beach. We set up an ice cream stall in the sand tray and the children have enjoyed pretending to sell ice creams to each other. In the small world area we set up a beach scene so that the children could tell stories about going to the beach.

For our English work this week the children enjoyed listening to the story, ‘What the Ladybird heard at the Seaside.’ In the story, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh attempt to cut the mermaid’s hair but thanks to the Ladybird the sea creatures stop this from happening. This inspired us to create wanted posters to catch Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh. Together the children described the two characters and used some fantastic adjectives to describe the appearance of the characters.

This week in Maths, the children have been looking at how shapes can be combined and separated to make new shapes. They have had the opportunity to fit shapes together and break shapes apart to investigate what shapes could be made. The children have used the pattern blocks to fit in star and triangle outlines exploring which shapes could combine and fit in the templates provided.

On Friday, it was great to have so many grandparents in the classroom to help the children complete a range of art activities. The children had the opportunity to create under the sea paper plates, make a jellyfish, take part in some observational drawing and collage a beautiful snail shell. Everyone had lots of fun!
