Sense Detectives: A Journey Through Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste & Touch!

Throughout the week, the children had lots of fun learning all about the five senses — sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell! They began by learning a catchy Five Senses Song to help them remember what each sense does. As the week went on, they went on a Senses Walk around the school, using their eyes to see, their ears to listen, their hands to touch different textures, and their noses to smell what was around them. In the classroom, the children became touch detectives, feeling inside mystery bags to guess what objects were hidden inside just by using their sense of touch. They also created shakers with different fillings to explore how sounds can change, and made a texture hand, exploring and describing how a variety of materials felt. To finish off the week, everyone enjoyed talking about their favourite tastes, sharing which foods they like best and how they taste. It was a fun and sensory-filled week that helped the children understand how our five senses help us explore and enjoy the world!

This week in Reception, we’ve been busy discovering the wonderful world of patterns! The children have been exploring how patterns appear all around us — in the way we move, the things we see in nature, and the objects we use every day. They loved creating their own AB patterns using body movements like clapping and jumping, arranging leaves, stones, and sticks outdoors, and using colourful resources to make repeating designs. The children showed great curiosity and focus as they noticed and created patterns.

We also enjoyed reading “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”, noticing the patterned language in the story and joining in with the rhythm and repetition. Inspired by this, the children used musical instruments to create their own sound patterns. To finish off our week, we watched the Numberblocks episode “Pattern Palace”, which sparked even more excitement for making patterns in the environment.

In Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle, the children have been dancing along to “Return of the Mack” and practising the ‘hook’ movement — a pattern of motion that will help when forming letters such as r, h, n, and p. We’ve also been playing a guessing game called “Apple Pie or Tomato Ketchup”, where children say the words in different voices while their friends try to guess who said them.

We were excited to have some ‘grown ups’ in our classroom this week for the parent event linked to reading. The classroom was a hive of activity with lots of different reading activities taking place. The children have had the opportunity to learn up to 20 sounds how amazing is that!! This week in our phonic learning we have practiced the following sounds and it would be amazing if you could watch these videos at home to support your child’s learning.
