The children have had a wonderful time taking part in some exciting Message Centre activities over the past week. After enjoying the story The Jolly Christmas Postman, they decided they wanted to create their own mail for the Jolly Postman and eagerly set to work making cards and messages. Later in the week, we shared the story Dear Santa, which led to a very special surprise—a mysterious parcel delivered straight to our classroom! The children had great fun guessing what might be inside, sharing lots of imaginative ideas. There were big smiles all around when we discovered it was a brand-new postbox for the class, perfect for sending messages to friends and encouraging even more lovely mark-making and early writing. It’s been a joyful, festive start to our learning!
The children have also been learning about four-sided shapes. They enjoyed being shape detectives and searching for rectangles in our environment. They took part in a sorting activity, grouping shapes into those with four sides and those without, and learned that a square is a special type of rectangle because its sides are all the same length. When the children were confident with the shapes they then had the opportunity to use these in their play to create a shape picture. The children then explored how shapes fit together and were excited to discover that two triangles can make a square. At the end of the week, we learned about day and night and talked about the different things that happen at each time of day. The children shared their ideas about daily routines, such as getting ready for school in the morning and going to bed at night.
We have really enjoyed learning about Christmas this week and sharing our own experiences and family traditions. The children have continued to learn about the Nativity story and have spent lots of time practising their lines, songs, and actions for our nativity performance, showing wonderful confidence and excitement. We’ve also been busy creating festive crafts, such as decorating our own log slice baubles as either a reindeer or a snowman. One of the highlights this week was making reindeer food for Christmas Eve, and the children loved making a special Christmas wish as they mixed their ingredients together.
It has been a truly magical week, filled with creativity, learning, and festive cheer. We are so proud of the children’s enthusiasm and achievements and can’t wait to celebrate all their hard work in the final week of term as we get ready to share our wonderful nativity performance.
