Waves, Whispers, and a Winged Hero!

This week, the children have thoroughly enjoyed diving into the story What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside as part of our Drawing Club sessions.

  • On Day One, the children drew their favourite character from the story.

  • On Day Two, they illustrated the setting where the seaside crime took place.

  • On Day Three, they put their thinking caps on to come up with clever ways for the police to catch the sneaky duo, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh!

We focused on some fantastic vocabulary throughout the week, including: swooped, wriggled, sneaked, trapped, spotted, and cunning.

Our maths learning this week focused on reinforcing the concepts of sharing, doubling, and takeaway, using the structure of "first, then, now."

  • The children loved the story The Doorbell Rang, where cookies had to be shared fairly among more and more children each time the doorbell rang. They then practised sharing using ‘cookie’ counters and small bears.

  • During our doubling sessions, we played a fun game of bingo. The children were given the answer and had to work out what the double would be.

  • Later in the week, we read 10 Little Pirates and explored how the number of pirates reduced with each turn. Using ten frames and counters, children played a game where their partner took some away while they closed their eyes—then described what had happened using the structure:
“First there were… counters, then you took… away, now there are…”

In our topic sessions, we’ve been thinking about what to pack for a trip to the beach. The children discussed what items would help them have fun and stay safe. We read the Sammy the Seagull story, which introduced the importance of seaside safety. We also learned about the role of lifeguards and what the different beach flags mean.

In provision, the children have loved building small world scenes based on What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside. The police station and toy cars have been especially popular—perfect for capturing Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len!

Our Beach Trip

We’re so excited for next week’s beach trip!
Here’s what your child will need on the day:

  • Spare clothes

  • A towel

  • A hat and sun cream (please apply sun cream at home before the trip)

  • A carrier bag for wet clothes

  • Packed lunch (please ensure there’s space in your child’s bag)

Children will go in the sea wearing the clothes they arrive in—so please send them in something suitable for paddling.
