Super Cops and Caped Crusaders
As we come to the end of our first half term, we’d like to congratulate all the children on a fantastic start to the year. They have settled in brilliantly, embraced new routines, and shown great enthusiasm for their learning. We are so proud of their hard work, kindness, and positive attitude.
This week, the children have enjoyed learning about people who help us in the community. We transformed the role-play area into a police station, and the children fully embraced this within their play. Jails were built, police cars were made, and criminals were caught and arrested before being placed in jail! Despite the best attempts of the criminals to escape, the police officers caught and apprehended them again. A lot of fun was had, with plenty of laughter from adults and children alike.
On Friday, the children were thrilled to see two real-life police officers in the hall for an assembly. We even had the opportunity to explore the police car and listen to the sirens! The children were amazed by the visit and left even more inspired in their play.

In Maths this week, we focused on the numbers 1, 2, and 3. The children practised their subitising skills – seeing the amount without counting – to say how many objects they could see. If you haven’t already downloaded the White Rose 1-Minute Maths app, we highly recommend it, especially the subitising section, to support children’s mathematical understanding. The children were fantastic when introduced to five frames, using counters to represent numbers. As number detectives, we were very impressed with how many ways they could find to make collections of 1, 2, or 3 objects.
In our RWI sessions, we learned the rest of our Set 1 sounds, and the children continue to impress us with their sound knowledge and Fred Talk. The links for the sounds we practised are below.
Our poem of the week was Scared, and we enjoyed singing “The Wheels on the Bus” as our song of the week. During Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle, the children danced and made spiral movements with their flappers, then recreated these on paper. It was a tricky move this week, but the children showed great determination in their mark making.
Our outside play has been inspired by superheroes – there have been plenty of opportunities to save the world and catch the ‘baddies’! The children loved creating their own masks and thinking about their unique superhero powers. It was a wonderful way to end the term, seeing everyone embracing their learning and playing cooperatively together.
We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break and returns refreshed and ready for more exciting learning next half term!
