A Blustery Day at Boscombe: Sand, Sea, and Excitement
On our visit to Boscombe Beach, the children had an unforgettable day filled with fun and discovery. They loved paddling in the chilly sea, laughing as the waves splashed around their feet. Back on the sand, they got creative building sandcastles and even created a volcano with the longest lava trail they could imagine, winding all the way to the shore. The children turned into little explorers, collecting treasures like colourful shells, smooth rocks, seaweed, and feathers. They excitedly fetched buckets of seawater to soak the dry sand, making it just right for building even bigger and better sandcastles. After all their hard work and adventure, they were treated to delicious ice lollies—a perfect way to cool down and enjoy a sweet moment together. We were so proud that the children didn’t let the wind dampen their spirits—their energy and excitement filled the beach with joy all day long.
This week in maths, we had a fantastic time applying the skills and knowledge we’ve built up throughout the year. We kicked things off with a lively and competitive dice game, where the children had to add the numbers on two dice and cover the total on their board—the first to get four counters in a row was crowned the winner! Later in the week, we turned our attention to problem solving using number rods. The children explored which combinations of shorter rods could match the length of a longer rod, developing their understanding of number relationships and equivalence. On Friday, we took on a hands-on maths challenge by designing and building boats from tin foil. The children estimated how many marbles their boat could hold before it sank, then tested their predictions with great excitement. It was a brilliant way to combine estimating, counting, and practical investigation—all while having lots of fun!
This week in Drawing Club, our learning was inspired by a pirate-themed episode of The Wombles. The children began by drawing their favourite Womble character, carefully thinking about the details that made each one unique. We then imagined what it might be like to be a Womble looking through a telescope. The children’s creativity truly shone through, with imaginative ideas such as birds playing on slides, number planets floating in space, grappling hooks caught in trees, and sneaky mice trying to steal a lunchbox! It was wonderful to hear all their inventive ideas and see how confidently they expressed them through both their drawings and discussions.
This week, the children learned all about recycling and how it helps protect our environment. They discovered that recycling means using things again instead of throwing them away, which helps keep our planet clean. Through the story Clean Up, the children understood why leaving litter outside is harmful to animals, plants, and the Earth.
Wow, what an amazing year it has been! I can’t believe the end of the year is closing in, with less than one week to go. I am incredibly proud of the children, all they have learned, and the wonderful friendships they have formed. They have worked hard, tried their best, and grown so much – both in their knowledge and in their confidence! As they get ready for their next big adventure, I wish them all the very best.
I hope they have a fantastic summer holiday filled with fun, rest, and happiness. I can’t wait to see all the new things they will achieve in the future. They truly are shining stars — true superstars!
