What a fun-filled festive week we have had, with Christmas Jumper Day, Christmas Dinner Day and two Nativity performances.
We were very proud of all the children who put on an excellent performance in Wriggly Nativity. The children have worked extremely hard to learn the songs and lines to help tell the story of the first Christmas. It was a joy to watch, and we hope you enjoyed it just as much as we did.
In our Message Centre this week, the children thought about what it would be like to go on the Polar Express and what they might see along the way. We used Google Earth to visit Santa at the North Pole, where we caught him checking his list in his office! The children loved exploring what it might be like and represented their ideas on large pieces of paper. It was wonderful to see the Polar Express tracks and the imaginative things the children thought they might encounter.
Following on from this, on Far Away Friday the children had the opportunity to board the Polar Express, enjoy hot chocolate and eat a delicious melted snowman biscuit. They have also enjoyed making representations of the North Pole using our new shiny blocks and gems.
We put a festive spin on our maths this week, and the children enjoyed playing games such as “Guess My Numicon Shape”. The shape was wrapped up and the children had to identify which shape it was. We also taught the children how to play “Roll a Snowman”, and we had a competition to see who could complete their snowman first. The children played against the teachers and showed excellent subitising skills when recognising the numbers on the dice. Towards the end of the week, we sang the song Five Mince Pies and enjoyed hiding the class elf and describing where she could be found during a game of hide and seek.
In our topic sessions, we explored what Christmas is like around the world and were fascinated to learn how different countries celebrate. The children discovered that Christmas in Australia is hot, and that in Japan people often eat fried chicken on Christmas Day followed by strawberry and cream cake. Many of the children thought that Mexico’s tradition of having a piñata would be great fun.
We can’t believe that the end of term is already here — the time has flown by! We are incredibly proud of everything the children have learned and achieved this term and of the enthusiasm and curiosity they show every day. We would like to thank you for your continued support and wish you all a very happy, restful Christmas and a joyful New Year.
