This week the children had the opportunity to meet Helen Chester a local artist who ran a workshop for the class. The children enjoyed looking at Helen’s painting of the Westbury White Horse and learning how to paint a horse. The children had a go at creating their own Westbury White Horse pictures and you can see how they turned out below.

Dragonflies Art 19th May 23

In our Topic this week we looked at the story, ‘Mr Gumpy’s outing’. The children enjoyed the ending of this story where all the characters fell in the water because the animals didn’t behave. The children have been inspired to create their own boats using different materials and it was the perfect opportunity to use our new wooden blocks.

Topic and Maths 19th May 23

In Maths, the children have practiced using a number track and counting on the correct number of spaces according to the dice. Following on from the track game the children then created their own games. As part of a problem-solving activity, the children had to work out which characters from the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s outing’ could be in the boat. The children had to work out which characters could be in the boat when given a number of legs. The used the characters to work out different combinations that could equal 8, 10 or 12 legs. At the end of the week, the children looked at estimating how many characters could fit in a boat before it sank. The children had lots of fun making tin foil boats and seeing which boat could hold the most compare bears.
