Westbury Infant School and Resource Base

Friday 1st April 2022

This week we continued with our Story Dear Zoo. The children enjoyed designing and making their very own zoo for our toy animals. They used the large loose parts to create enclosures and thought carefully about what each animal might need and who they could live next to. The children created posters and signs for their zoo. It was great to see the teamwork involved in creating the zoo and all of the amazing writing.

The children had the opportunity to get creative this week and make animals using a range of different materials. We had an assortment of animals made as you can see from the photographs below.

The children have also enjoyed retelling the story of Dear Zoo. Some of the children innovated the story to include different animals and the reasons they would be sent back. In the loose parts area, the children were challenged to create their own loose part animal. Take a look at the pictures and see if you can guess what animals were made.

Dragonflies Loose Parts

In our maths learning, the children got the chance to play bowling. They would roll the ball and see how many skittles they knocked over and how many remained standing. The children recorded their scores and then compared who got the most or fewest.

We looked at ‘Day Monkey Night Monkey’ to help the children learn about nocturnal and diurnal animals. We sorted animals into those that could be seen in the day and those that can be seen at night.

We had a virtual zoo visit on Thursday – The children loved watching the live zoo cams at San Diego Zoo. The children enjoyed watching the hippos snorting water and then sinking back down. The virtual visit promoted lots of talk about animals and following the viewing we played – What am I? The children listened to clues and then had to guess the zoo animal.
