Friday 20th June

What a scorcher this week has been! The children have coped brilliantly with the heat this week and have enjoyed lots of summer themed activities. It was a shame we were unable to go on the beach trip but we look forward to taking them in a few weeks time. There have been lots of lovely discussions about their own beach experiences as well as what they are looking forward to when we go together. This tied in nicely with learning about beach safety which included learning about the different flags we might see at the beach and what they mean. We have also been thinking about what lives in the ocean. We read the story ‘Commotion in the ocean’ to find out all the different sea creatures that live there. We have been learning a poem called ‘a grain of sand’ this week which is an 8 line poem. We try and learn our poems off by heart by the end of each week!

We have enjoyed the well known story ‘Tiddler’ in drawing club this week. The children have thought about ways Tiddler might be rescued from a net, invented ways to hide from the shark and thought of their own ways Tiddler might tell his friends that he defeated the shark! Their ideas and writing were amazing. Well done Wallabies.

In maths we have been focusing on composition of number and using part-part whole models to represent how different numbers are made up. We enjoyed listening to stories like Kipper’s toy box and using toys from around the classroom to find the whole number and the parts. We also used tens frames and counters to spot the number bonds to 10; the different colours help us spot this quickly! We especially liked using the cubes to build towers to represent number bonds to 10.
