‘Tiddler’s Big Adventures: One Little Fish with an Endless Imagination!"
This week in Drawing Club, the children had a fantastic time diving into the story of Tiddler. We explored the tale through three exciting “I Wonder” days, which really sparked the children’s creativity and imagination.
On Day One, we asked the children to come up with ideas to rescue Tiddler from a fishing net. Their ideas were wonderfully inventive—from crabs snipping a hole in the net, to a shark biting through it, and even Tiddler swimming away because he was faster than the shark!
Day Two challenged the children to think of clever hiding places for Tiddler to avoid being eaten by the shark. Popular ideas included hiding in swaying seaweed or curling up inside a treasure chest.
On Day Three, we explored how Tiddler could share his stories with the ocean world. The children suggested an underwater speaker system so he could broadcast his tales, and one creative idea involved a submarine pulling a story banner through the water!
Our vocabulary focus this week included: traipsing, daydreaming, tardy, conversing, ensnared, abandoned, reunited, and celebrating. The children enjoyed using these words in their storytelling and discussions.
In maths this week, we focused on number bonds beyond 5, with daily activities to support recall, especially for numbers up to and beyond 10.
We practiced subitising during our warm-up sessions using the White Rose 1-Minute App, which the children really enjoyed. One favourite activity involved using seven teddies and hiding some to explore number bonds to 7.
When exploring number 8, we used Numicon to find different combinations that add up to 8. The children also used a whole-part-part model to experiment with different ways to make 9, moving counters between the parts. For number bonds to 10, we used a tens frame and red and yellow counters to visually show the combinations that make 10.
In topic work, we used maps to locate beaches around the United Kingdom. The children learned that green represents land and blue shows water. Using Google Earth, we explored real beaches, then compared them to cities, discussing their similarities and differences.
Inspired by the story Flotsam, we talked about beachcombing and imagined all the fascinating items we might find washed up on the shore. We also read Commotion in the Ocean to learn about different sea creatures. This led to a fun “What Am I?” listening game, where the children used clues to guess which sea creature was being described.
Although we didn’t get to visit a real beach, the children had plenty of fun with water play throughout the week—perfect for keeping cool!
The children have coped brilliantly with the hot weather and have had such a busy, imaginative, and joyful week. We’re sure they’ll be ready for a well-deserved rest. Enjoy the sunshine and have a lovely weekend!
