Running, Jumping, Cheering: A week of Sports and Smiles!
Kangaroos have had a great final week of term 5 with two afternoons of sports. Sports Day was a vibrant celebration of energy and enthusiasm as children took part in a variety of fun and engaging activities. From the splash-filled excitement of the water race to the careful balance of the egg and spoon race. The children showed determination in the javelin throw and bean bag toss, while their speed and teamwork shone in the relay race. It was a wonderful display of effort, creativity, and team spirit from every one. Mrs Hughes was very impressed as was I when I took you for your practice run!
In Drawing Club this week, the children had an exciting time exploring the story The Hundred Decker Bus! Over three creative days, they brought the story to life through pictures and writing. On day one, they chose a character from the bus and drew them in detail, using their imaginations to add fun features. On day two, the children designed their very own deck for the bus—some turned it into a cafe, a swimming pool, or even a soft play deck! On the final day, they thought of a tricky obstacle that might stop the bus, like a giant puddle or a broken wheel, and came up with clever solutions to keep the journey going. The vocabulary from the week included the following words, Mechanical, ascending, navigate, inflate, extension, uncertainty, crew and layer.
In maths this week, the children explored shapes in fun and imaginative ways! They began by cutting rectangles into two triangles and investigating the different shapes they could create by rearranging them. They also enjoyed drawing 2D shapes and turning them into imaginative animals, like triangle shaped fish and rectangle bodied cows. Using a mix of shapes, the children made their own 2D shape pictures, showing great creativity. To finish, they looked closely at 3D objects to find the 2D shapes hidden inside, the children worked in pairs to place a 3D shape inside a feely bag whilst their partner guessed which shape was in the bag just by touch.
The children had a fantastic time exploring Westbury using Google Earth! They were challenged to find out their own addresses, and once they could say where they lived, they looked it up together on the map. Through this, they learned all about maps and then created their own—both on paper and in 3D form. To inspire their learning, the children listened to stories like Martha Maps It Out, Me on a Map, and The Naughty Bus. They even went around the school imagining different adventures for the Naughty Bus, making up fun scenarios as they explored!
As we wrap up this half term, we’re so proud of all the incredible learning, laughter, and growth our children have shown. It’s been a busy and joyful few weeks filled with new experiences and memorable moments. We hope everyone enjoys a restful break, recharging for another exciting term ahead. We can’t wait to see what the next half term brings!
