Friday 3rd May 2024

We have had a another busy week in Zebra Class! The children are really enjoying their swimming sessions every Tuesday afternoon and it is wonderful to see how much their water confidence is increasing week by week. I am very proud of all the children. If you have any availability to help at the pool this Tuesday (7th May) or the following Tuesday (14th May), please drop me an email:

In Maths this week, the children have been focusing on finding halves of shapes and numbers. They have recognised that when we find a half, there must be two equal parts. The children enjoyed folding and cutting shapes to find half and they progressed to using different concrete materials to find halves of numbers.

In English, we have been focusing very closely on ensuring our sentences start with a capital letter, end with a full stop and contain finger spaces. We have written some suprt character descriptions of Jamina and the elephant from our focus text, The Hunter. We have also recounted the story and thought about the characters' feelings at different stages of the plot. Miss McVeigh even dressed up as the main character, Jamina. Mrs Channon actually wore this outfit (see photos below) when she spent some time in an African school.

We have now finished our topic on Kenya and have found many differences between life in Kenya and life in Westbury. We were fascinated by the Maasai Tribe who live in Kenya and build their own houses using natural materials and cow dung! They eat, sleep and cook (using a very smoky fire) all in one room. This is very different to our homes which have separate rooms.

Next week, we will be starting our DT sewing topic. If you think you may have some availability to come in during the afternoon (week beginning 14th May) to help us with our sewing, please speak to either Mrs Channon or Mrs Rockey to arrange a day. The children will need help with their needles, threading etc.

Have a wonderful, long bank holiday weekend and see you back in school on Tuesday!

Mrs Rockey :-)
