Welcome Back to Term 6!

What a fantastic start we’ve had to Term 6 with our new topic: “Oh, I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside!” The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring what beaches are like and sharing their own seaside experiences. It’s been wonderful to hear their stories and see their enthusiasm!

In Drawing Club, we watched a classic episode of Portland Bill, which featured a mysterious sea monster. This inspired the children to imagine and draw their own sea monsters—some scary, some friendly, and all very creative! On Day 2, they designed unique lighthouses for Portland Bill to live in, and on Day 3, they came up with imaginative ideas for what the sea monster might eat—anything to keep him from snacking on the lighthouse keeper! Our vocabulary words for the week were: error, embarrassed, dusk, rowdy, petrified, sprawl, alarming, and shiver. The children used them confidently in their discussions and drawings.

In Maths, we focused on fair sharing and grouping. The children practiced using counters to determine whether numbers were odd or even. One of our challenges involved working out how many fields were needed for grouping sheep—tricky at first, but they soon got the hang of it and showed great perseverance.

Our topic sessions have explored questions like: What is a beach? What do you wear to the beach? What can you do there? The children especially enjoyed building their own beach scenes using small world characters and loose parts. From mermaid habitats to sea creature homes, their creativity has been truly impressive. They’ve also started creating beach collages—painting the sea with various shades of blue and experimenting with white to lighten the colour. For the sandy shore, they used different tones of yellow and even sprinkled real sand onto their artwork!

Another highlight was drawing self-portraits to be framed for our Grandparent Art Exhibition. It was wonderful to welcome so many grandparents and parents into the classroom. The children had a fantastic time taking part in sea-themed arts and crafts, including making jellyfish from paper plates, collaging rainbow fish, designing ocean scenes, and crafting hand-shaped fish on lollipop sticks.

It’s been a joyful and busy start to the term. We hope you all have a lovely weekend, and we’re excited to dive into next week’s story: What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside
