Wow – what a week of sparks and celebrations!

What a fantastic first week back we’ve had! The children have been full of smiles, stories, and excitement. It was such a joy to welcome them back and hear all about their half-term adventures. If you have any photos from the break, we’d love to see them! Please email them to class7@westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk The children absolutely love sharing their pictures and spotting themselves on the big screen!

We kicked off the week with Bonfire Night fun! The children danced along to Katy Perry – Firework and made their very own firework shapes with lots of sparkle and energy. Then we had a special message from the night sky, who was feeling rather sad because there were no fireworks to see. The children quickly came to the rescue by creating their own dazzling displays on black sugar paper using glitter, glue, chalk, and paint pens. The results were truly spectacular! To celebrate helping the night sky, we watched real fireworks on the big screen — there were lots of “oohs” and “aahs” all around!

During our topic time, we found out why we celebrate Bonfire Night and the children shared their own memories of watching fireworks and bonfires. On the 5th of November, excitement was in the air, and we made some firework toast — it was as colourful as it was delicious! Later in the day, we had a mysterious phone call asking for our help. A message came through during our ‘message centre’ learning with a secret code to solve! There was a fire engine that wouldn’t stop spinning, so the children worked together to write special codes to make it stop. From magic potions to stop signs and even food filled with magic — their ideas were brilliant! And guess what? It worked! The fire engine was saved, thanks to our clever code-breakers.

This week in Maths, we continued on the theme of 1, 2, 3. The children had the opportunity to watch Numberblocks and create a staircase pattern to show how the numbers increase by 1 each time. They then explored one more or one fewer than a number. We did some problem-solving, thinking about animals and how they could be placed on two or three fields, using language such as "2 and 1 make three altogether." At the end of the week, the children demonstrated their knowledge of number bonds by arranging the spots in different ways on a ladybird template.

Friday was extra special because it was our very first Far Away Friday of the year! We made passports and explored India to celebrate Diwali — the Festival of Lights. The children learned all about the festival, made tasty edible fireworks, tried poppadoms, and explored beautiful Rangoli patterns. They even had a peek at some of the colourful clothes worn during Diwali celebrations.

What a week it’s been — full of laughter and learning!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone — you’ve earned it!
