It's all about the cars!

Wow – what a fabulous week we have had and what start to the new term!   Linking to our topic ‘The History of Cars’, we were very fortunate to have two cars brought into the car park for us to take a look at and actually get to sit inside; a Ford Cortina from the 1970s and an eighty-seven-year-old Morris Minor.  To then, finishing the week with a visit from the children’s Grandparents to see the children’s art and join in with a fun activity!

The children have shown such enthusiasm for our new topic and I’m sure the experience of sitting in and ‘driving’ the old cars has spurred this on.  The children were fascinated to see that the windows had to be manually wound up and down and that were were no seatbelts in the older of the cars.  Also, the split window for air conditioning was also remarked upon.  As you can see from the pictures, the children had great fun in the cars – a great experience bringing our topic to life.  We are all very much looking forward to our trip to The Motor Museum later this term. The children continued with their observations back in the classroom and listed all the similarities and difference which they had noticed.  We shared the story ‘If I built a car’ by Chris Van Dusen and the children designed their own fabulous cars.  We had cars designed with jacuzzies, pizza makers, Alexas’ and swimming pools!! Is this the future??? Here’s the link so you can share the story at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgzB-COHPQE

Friday afternoon saw the creativity continue with the assistance of the children’s grandparents and adults. It was lovely to see so many of you come and visit us in Beetle Class and join the activity before going into the art exhibition.  It was a fiddly job making the cup cars which were propelled by balloons, but as always, the Brilliant Beetles persevered!  A big thank you to all the adults for the extra help and encouragement.

In maths, we have been creating and reading data from pictograms, tally charts and block charts.  The children have learnt how to read and create data as well as the importance of reading the key. We have had great fun creating our own charts and the chorus of ‘What’s your favourite ice-cream?’ could be heard all around the room today.

Some of the children have changed RWI groups this term.  Reading books will still be issued every Friday.  Please ensure that your child brings their reading book and journal to school each day as we are lucky to have extra support to hear the children read in school. You can support your child by reading with your child daily and using the supported resources on the RWI blog.  You can access the RWI blog here https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-9th-June-2023/

Just a reminder, as the sun is now shining, please can children have sun hats in school every day so we can continue to use the outdoor spaces.

Mrs Jeffery will be in class; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with Mrs Rockey taking Beetle Class on Thursday.

Wishing you all a very happy sunny weekend!

Mrs Jeffery, Mrs Rockey, Miss Smith and Mrs Ball.
