Jumping back into Term 2!

What a great start to Term 2.  The children have returned with enthusiasm and bounce; jumping straight back into their learning!

We have been sharing a new book in English, ‘Where the poppies now grow.’ by Hilary Robinson.  The children have engrossed themselves in the story of Ray and Ben and are already joining in reciting the story as I read it to them.  They have written some fantastic sentences using nouns and verbs and have enjoyed listening to some songs to help them remember what these grammatical terms are.  We have also incorporated drama into our learning with the children pretending to be soldiers so they could describe what they could see, hear, smell, taste and feel. They then worked in groups to share their ideas before putting their ideas into sentences.

We have also begun a new topic in History ‘What is Remembrance?’  The children have drawn items which evoke memories for them and have discussed why we wear poppies and what they symbolise.  The children have made links to the story we are sharing in English and even noticed a poppy flag on the way to swimming!  We have looked at the different colour poppies which people wear and what they mean.  The children then drew, painted, coloured in and decorated poppies which we will use for a collective display.  Today they put all their learning together and created posters encouraging people to wear poppies for Remembrance.

This week, on Tuesday, the children had their first swimming session and we have said to the children how proud we are of them all.  They all gave it a go, listened to the lovely instructors and behaved beautifully. A huge big thank you here to our parent helpers, the sessions could not go ahead without your support – it is very much appreciated.  As Tuesday swimming lessons will replace the Monday outdoor PE lesson for this term, the children will need to be in outdoor PE kit on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  It is fine for the children to wear their school shoes on these days.

In maths we have continued our addition and subtraction learning and it has been great to hear the children sharing their knowledge, making links to previous learning and using the resources to independently find the answers.

We have shared some lovely stories together this week, here’s the link to ‘Everybody’s Welcome’ by Patricia Hegarty if you would like to share it with your child too.

Next week, Mrs Jeffery will be in class Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday morning, Thursday and Friday with Mrs Watts taking Meerkat Class on Wednesday afternoon.  Ms Smith, our fantastic TA, will be with the class all week.

The weather has certainly now turned so please ensure that your child has a named waterproof coat in school every day.

New book bag books will continue to be issued every Friday so please do share these with your child.  If you have any unreturned books at home please send them into school next week.  Thank you.

Wishing you all a wonderful bonfire weekend – have fun and stay safe if you are enjoying fireworks!
