Westbury Infant School and Resource Base

Ladybird Class 22nd April

Hello everyone.

I hope that you had a fun Easter break. It has been lovely hearing what the children have been doing and to see them back in school.

This week, we started our new topics. Year 1 are learning all about how the seasons change with a particular focus on Spring. We have looked at how the days get longer and how the weather changes before moving on to how animals’ behaviour changes in Spring. Next week, we will be investigating different trees and plants and what happens to them in Spring.

Year 2 have a geography topic based on Kenya but called ‘Why don’t meerkats live at the North Pole?’ and have begun by researching facts about the country of Kenya. We then looked at the features of national parks and game reserves and next week will be finding out about the Big 5 safari animals.

In Maths, Year 1 children have been practising counting in 2s and 10s and using what they know to help them to solve problems. We have been working practically as the pictures show before moving on to work in our books. Next week, we will be counting in fives.

Year 2 pupils have been learning about time – o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to and reading these times. It would be great if they could practise this at home. Next week, they will be looking at reading times to the nearest five minutes before moving on to more general ‘time’ facts.

We have started new RE topics. Year 2 pupils are finding out about Islam – this week we have thought about places we belong. Year 1s are learning about Judaism and looked at Hanukkah and associated objects this week.

In Life Skills, Year 1 have started to look at the importance of fruit and vegetables when keeping healthy – we created a rainbow of different foods to think about what we need to include in our diet. Year 2 created a learning line and thought about what we need to do to learn things and how to encourage each other. Our Year 2 photographs show us practising different ways of throwing bean bags to develop our catching skills.

Next Wednesday afternoon, Year 1 pupils will be visiting Matravers for a sports afternoon so they will need to wear their PE kit on that day. We will be leaving school at 1.30pm and returning before the end of the day. If any parents are free to walk up with us, please could you let me know.
