Meerkats and Materials!
And just like that we are into Term 6! A warm welcome back to you all, it was so lovely to see all those refreshed faces and smiles bound into class this week as I opened the door.
Well, you will not be surprised to hear that the Marvellous Meerkats jumped straight back into their learning this week with new topics in all subjects. It was a good job that I moved the carpet spots as the meerkats have certainly grown over the holidays.
In English, we have shared ‘Fire Cat’. A fictional story based on the Great Fire of London. It was fantastic to hear the children recall their knowledge of London and its landmarks as we read all about John and his little ginger cat Sammy. Some of the children got into character as we hot seated ‘John’ and answered questions posed by the class. We sequenced the story and today the children re-enacted it in groups in preparation for writing a diary entry nest week. Please do ask your child about the story.
We practised sequencing the days of the week and months of the year in Maths before moving on to telling the time this week. We thought about different activities that we do and whether they would take seconds, minutes or hours to complete. Telling the time is an invaluable skill, so please do support this learning at home by asking your child about the time; we are concentrating on o’clock and half past first.
Our new science topic is ‘Materials’. We have engaged in some very practical learning; collecting objects and identifying what they are made from. We found out that some objects are made from more than one material, and when we took a calculator apart we realised there where hidden materials inside. I was excited to show the children my new foil slippers but they quickly told me it was not a suitable material for a slipper so we pinned it to our working wall to remind us of properties required so objects are fit for purpose. The children also took their learning outside to see what materials we could see and touch around our school. We will continuing investigating next week.
We have had such fun in music this week. We began by listening to a piece of music and drawing how it made us feel. This is a calm and mindful activity that you can easily replicate at home. We then used our bodies; clapping, tapping, clicking, to create the beat and feel the rhythm. Before finishing the lesson, quite aptly, by listening to the classic ‘Singing in the Rain.’ The children could not help but feel the joy of the music and we ended up dancing and singing all around the classroom!
New reading books were issued today. Please do share these with your children and reading is the gateway to all learning. If you need any help or advice as to how to help and support your child please just ask.
SHOUT OUT FOR HELP!
Our last trip of the year is to Lacock Abbey on Tuesday 17th June. We require 3 parent helpers to join us for the day to enable this trip to go ahead. Please let me know if you can help.
Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TA, Miss Smith.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
