Meerkats and buckets!

Another hot but wonderful week in Meerkat Class.  We have taken full advantage of the weather and taken our learning outside into the shade of the trees each morning.

In English we have started a new book ‘The Building Boy’ by Ross Montgomery and the children have already immersed themselves into the story; by making predictions and then discussing them, hot seating to get to know the characters alongside exploring new vocabulary.  Here’s the link if you would like to share it at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnTAmxlmyic

Maths was definitely an outside activity this week when we began investigating volume and capacity.  We looked at all different size containers to compare capacity before filling them to compare volumes held.  We looked at the units of measurement and discussed why somethings are measured in millilitres and others in litres. This is a great activity to continue in the summer holidays – hours of free fun!

In history we have continued with our learning about the Great Fire of London.  We have put on our historian hats and looked at how we know what happened and how we piece the evidence together.  We made a replica narrow street and re-enacted the causes of the ferocious fire before implementing actions like those taken all that time ago to stop the fire – fire breaks!  The children then explored creating streets and fire breaks with blocks and loose parts.  We visited Giraffe Class and were treated to a song which they have made up to help them remember all the facts.

Music continues to be our favourite lesson and as we were using buckets for maths we all learnt the children’s classic song ‘There’s a hole in my bucket’ this week.  In our music lesson we got the xylophones out and created tunes to play along to our song ‘There’s hold in the bottom of the sea.’  The Meerkats are certainly a musical bunch!

A couple of reminders… Please ensure that your child has a sunhat in school every day and their reading book, we are still very fortunate to have Shirley and Rhonda in with us on Mondays and Thursdays and the children do very much enjoy reading with them.  Thank you.

Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TA, Miss Smith.

Have a great weekend everyone – enjoy the sunshine!
