Mini Leaders with Mr Widger

On Tuesday afternoon we were lucky enough to have a visitor in Firefly Class. We welcomed Mr Widger, a sports leader from Kingdown Secondary School. Mr Widger led a workshop to help the children understand the importance of playing games. He also encouraged the children to think about how playing games and sports in school actually makes them feel. The children talked about physical feelings, such as hot and sweaty- as well as feelings linked to their emotions, such as happy, excited and relaxed. The children shared their thoughts and ideas through pictures and words in their special workbook, provided by Mr Widger.

The afternoon then progressed to the children carrying out a very practical session outside. The children had to work in groups of three and allocat a different role to each person. The children could either be:

-The leader

-The rule keeper

-The equipment master

The children were allowed to choose one piece of equipment only (for example, a ball, a bean bag, a hoop) and had to use this to invent a game. The children were required to use their amazing imaginations, as well as work collaboratively as a team. The leader then rotated around to a new group to teach them their newly invented game.

The children had such a wonderful afternoon and were excited to discover that Mr Widger had T-Shirts for everyone with the slogan, 'I am a mini leader', written across the front.

As the year progresses, our Year 2 mini leaders will be teaching games to some of our younger children in Year 1 and Reception....and they will of course be wearing their T-Shirts with pride.

Here are some photographs capturing the various stages of the afternoon:
