Musical Beetles!

Well, it may have only been a four-day week but the Beetles have been very busy indeed!

We started the week with an energising drumming workshop.  Omar, our drum leader brought in a selection of African drums for us all to use.  We learnt about the different types of drums, the sounds they make, how to hold and tune them.  We formed a drum circle and played some rhythmic in-the-moment-music pieces.  We learnt how to create different beats and then put the whole thing together with some singing.  The children were invited to finish the session with some improvised dancing and drumming.  What a talented bunch the Beetles and Ladybirds are!

We also began our new DT topic this week ‘How do you make a puppet?’ We looked a selection of puppets and one even stayed and joined in our end of day story.  We looked at different joining techniques and investigated which ones we thought would work best for our hand puppet.  We practised a simple running stitch as we identified that this would be best for our puppets.  We learnt that the needle must go in and out and never around the fabric when creating a running stitch.  Well done Beetle Class for showing determination when practising this new skill.  It was tricky but they didn’t give up!

In Maths we have been problem solving using our knowledge of number bonds, number lines, partitioning numbers and addition and subtraction.  The children have used apparatus to support their calculations and explain their reasoning.

In Life Skills, we looked at the importance of good hygiene and how washing our hands prevents germs from spreading.  The children shared their ideas and we all sang the handwashing song to the tune of Happy Birthday.  What a musical week we have had!

Please continue to read with your child each day.  The children will be issued new RWI books on a Friday.  On that note, just a couple of reminders, please make sure your child’s book and reading journal is in school every day.  Also, all children still need a coat in school as it is still a bit chilly. Tuesday is our PE day, please ensure your child wears their PE kit to school every Tuesday in order to fully participate.

Mrs Jeffery will be in class; Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with Mrs Rockey taking Beetle Class on Thursday.

Wishing you all a happy weekend!

Mrs Jeffery, Mrs Rockey, Miss Smith and Mrs Ball.
