Saturday 18 March

Hello everyone.

Well! What an exciting week we have had! We all loved the trips on Wednesday as you will see from our photos.

Year 1 set off bravely to catch the train to Warminster Park. Their job was to find out as much as possible about the trees and plants that grow there as part of our topic on plants. They explored, took photos and compared plants before returning to school tired and happy.

Year 2 embarked the coach to the Wild Place Project in Bristol. It was cold but ideal weather to see all the animals there. The bears and the wolves were all out – the Wild Place staff told us we were lucky. When the weather is colder or warmer, they tend to hide in their quarters. The giraffes were amazing and we thrilled at the meerkats. We thought about the places where these animals live as part of our science topic on habitats.

In Maths, Year 1 children have been measuring with rulers. We have become good at lining the object we are measuring up with 0 and counting carefully to see how long it is. At the end of the week, we started to add together and take away two lengths and solve problems when we did not start at 0cm – that was tricky. Next week, we are moving on to measuring mass.

Year 2 pupils have started work on fractions this week – looking at equal parts of a shape before moving on to find halves and quarters of shapes. We had to make sure that the parts were the same size for them to be a fraction. Next week, we will begin to move on to recognising thirds and look at unit fractions.

In Science, Year 1s have planted bean seeds and we will be observing how they grow over the three weeks of this topic. We also went out on a scavenger hunt in the playground to find different flowers (pictures as mid-March is not the ideal growing season for many flowers) and looked at which were garden flowers, which wild flowers and which were both. Next week, we will be comparing flowers.

Year 2s have looked at living, dead and used to be living before moving on to researching different habitats around the world.

In RE, Year 2s have recounted the events of Palm Sunday and have started to think about the significance of this day in the Christian calendar.

Year 1s have thought about money in life skills, where it comes from and what families might spend money on.

Year 2s read the story of My Mouth is a Volcano and will be recording strategies they could use to control themselves when they are upset.

We are lucky that we have been joined by Mrs Lee, who will work with us in the afternoons from now on.

We are also looking forward to our Mother’s Day Assemblies next week – Tuesday for Year 2 and Wednesday for Year 1. These will start at 9am in the School Hall. We will also be walking to Church on Friday afternoon, leaving school at 1.30pm. If any Year 2 parents would like to join us for the walk, please could you let me know so I can inform Mrs Russam.
