Westbury Infant School and Resource Base

Saturday 29 April

Hello everyone.

We have had a nice week with lots of energy and creativity.

In Maths, Year 2s have continued to work on time – looking in particular at durations and general knowledge. Year 1s have been investigating equal and unequal groups, adding groups and drawing arrays.

Year 1s have been continuing their science topic on the changing seasons. We worked on how leaves, flowers and blossom appear in the spring and how this enables animals to have enough food to have babies. We then wrote an acrostic poem about spring.

Year 2s are finding out about Kenya in their geography topic. We looked at the Big 5 animals and then found out about the Masaai people before comparing and contrasting the life of a girl living in rural Kenya with our lives in Westbury.

In RE, Year 2s are learning about Islam – we thought about how Muslims are committed to their religion before writing facts about Islamic prayer. We looked at the different prayer positions, which we will investigate in more detail next week. In Music, Year 2s learned the rap Hey, my name is Joe, which was great fun.The video of them performing it would not upload onto the blog so I will put up some stills on the classroom window next week.

Year 1s are finding out about Judaism in RE. We looked at the story of Hanukkah and how the menorah helps to celebrate the festival of light. The children drew their own menorah and added the candle flame by dipping their finger in yellow paint. In Music, we learned Boom, Chicka Boom and found out about the sound of the different instruments before listening to Mars from Holst’s Planet Suite.

In PE, we practised throwing and catching skills before playing the Junkyard game, where two teams have to clear their territory of ‘junk’ – bean bags, balls and hoops.

Year 1s went to Matravers on Wednesday afternoon to practise different skills with the sports leaders there. They had a lovely time.

I hope that you enjoy this long weekend and we look forward to seeing the children back in school on Wednesday.
