Show me what you know Meerkats!

Lifting a quote from one of our favourite class books ‘When I say it was hot, it really was hot, it was hotter than flames on your toes!’ I think it sums up our week with the glorious sunshine. However, the marvellous Meerkats showed great resilience, accepting playtime and timetable changes and just getting on with it.  We had lots of water breaks and thank you everyone for sending in sun hats!

We have extended our range of descriptive vocabulary in English this week, thinking about the characters and the settings in our story ‘Building Boy’ by Ross Montgomery. The children have really embraced the challenge with the use of similes and links to prior learning.  Today we acted out scenes from the story thinking about expression and how we can show it. Here’s the link to the text, the children love it so please do let them share it with you at home.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnTAmxlmyic

It was all about directions in maths.  We have been practising our left and right, clockwise and anticlockwise before progressing onto giving and following directions.  This skill that requires practical hands-on experience so we have taken full advantage using the small world to support our new learning.  We created treasure maps - they are a great way to practice this skill, another fun and simple holiday activity.

We finished our topic this week ‘The Great Fire of London’ and the children’s end of topic piece really showcased all they know. I ask the children to ‘show me what you know’ and they rose to the challenge by showing me with accurate details and beautifully illustrated pictures.   It has been fantastic to see their engagement and enthusiasm for this topic.  As the photos show, they have really dived into this learning.

As we come to the end of the music block, I asked the children to vote for their favourite song that they have learnt this term and ‘Knicky, Knocky, Knacky, Knoo’ won. Monday afternoons are always so joyful in Meerkat Class as they all sing and dance – they really all the most musical Meerkats in town!  Here’s the link so they can perform it at home for you.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMZqjfhKMZY

Please can all library books borrowed be returned on Tuesday and all Book Bag Books be returned on Friday. This will ensure all books are back ready to be shared in the new school year.

Next week I will be in class Monday to Thursday and Mrs Rous will be teaching the Meerkats on Friday.  Our wonderful TA, Miss Smith will be with the children every day.

Have a great weekend everyone – enjoy the sunshine!

Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
