We've had a very special visitor...

Wednesday was a very exciting day for Beetle Class and the other Year 2 children as Florence Nightingale came to visit us!

Trowbridge Museum joined us for the afternoon and we all enjoyed the 3 different workshops they arranged for us. To start, Florence told us all about her life, some of the children helped Florence tell the story of her life by dressing up as a young Florence and as a Florence the nurse.   We even saw her famous lamp!  We then met Mr Day, a good friend of Mary Seacole.  He told us all about her life and the long journey she travelled to Crimea where she too helped the British soldiers.  Finally, we got to see a variety of artefacts from the Victorian era.  Some of the children dressed up in mop caps, top hats, shawls and wool capes and bonnets. The children were amazing, sharing with the volunteers, their learning about the topic so far and making connections with the hands-on artefacts.  We will continue with our topic of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole until the end of term but the visit has really brought the learning to life!

I have attached a link to short animation of Florence Nightingale’s life for the children to watch.

We have been busy in Maths this week too, grouping and sharing to develop our multiplication and division skills.  The children have been using resources to support their understanding and learning.

In PE, the children travelled a route using equipment of various heights. The had to maintain their balance and skillfully perform a jump with a controlled landing.  It has been great to see the children’s confidence grow as they approach and jump off the higher equipment.

Anyone passing Beetle Class on Thursday would have been in for a real treat as The Beetles took part in chair drumming.  They followed the music to accompany a jolly sea shanty, all keeping time with a synchronised performance.  Great teamwork and musical talent!

Monday is the Year 2 parent event. Please do come and join us in class from 2.15!  Beetle and Ladybird classes will join for this event in Beetle Classroom.  Next Thursday we have a special celebration event planned for the children and it is also a non-uniform day.

We have already had some entries for the Valentine drawing competition.  I am displaying all entries on our class window.   Could all pictures please be handed into to myself or a member of Beetle Class team by Monday 6th February 2023.  The judging will be on the same day.

Just a couple of small reminders, if your child wears glasses please ensure that they have them in school each day. We are still missing a couple of sketch books, please check at home and if found please return to school. Can all homework books be in school next week so I can ensure Knowledge Organisers are in everyone’s books.  PE is on Tuesday, please ensure your child comes into school in their PE kit. Thank you.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!
