Welcome Back Marvellous Meerkats to Term 2!
Welcome back everyone to Term 2, we hope you all had a wonderful half term break. New term and new learning for the marvellous Meerkats; we enjoyed a new story book in English this week and a new history topic! Also, we had two special visitors join us on Wednesday – Mrs Allen and Sonnie. The children excitedly told her all about what we have been learning and what we have been doing in class.
In maths, we have continued to explore number value, we have counted up to 100 in tens both forwards and backwards and have begun partitioning 2-digit numbers into how many tens and ones. The children have used the resources to practically do this before having a go at recording in their books.
We shared ‘Where the poppies now grow’ by Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey in English. The story introduces the children to the meaning of why we wear poppies and who we are remembering by wearing them. In the story we meet two boys Ben and Ray and follow them as they grow up, join the army and go to war before returning home together. The children have used their senses to describe what Ben and Ray would have seen, heard, smelt and felt before writing a postcard home. Next week we will continue sharing the story when we create a comic strip to recount events. You can share the story at home by clicking on the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvNuEecf4cI
Our history topic ‘What is Remembrance?’ introduced the children to the importance of Remembrance; when it happens and why. With the link to our story in English the children have made poppies, learnt about why we have different colour poppies, listened to The Last Post, shared the poem ‘In Flanders Field’ and talked about our own memories. We drew and made objects which helped us remember special events before making poppies. As the photos show, everyone made a poppy and we collectively created our own poppy wreaths to be displayed in our class this week for Remembrance.
In music we had a go at reciting the tongue twister ‘She sells sea shells on the sea shore’. It was tricky but we worked together and some children were even brave enough to recite it on their own! We then talked about different instruments and the different sounds they make before watching an orchestra play. Just like an orchestra we then chose instruments to play all together – what a musical bunch the Meerkats are!
Odd Socks Day
Linking to our learning in Life Skills about bullying and what to do if worried about it, on Monday in celebration of the start of Anti-Bullying Week, the children are invited to take part in Odd Socks Day on Monday 10th November. This is a fun way to celebrate what makes us all unique and to show that it’s okay to be different. Children are encouraged to come to school wearing their brightest, craziest odd socks – no uniform changes needed, just socks!
New reading books were sent home on Friday. Please send reading folders into school every day as we are very fortunate to have volunteers who come in the listen to the children read each week.
You will have noticed we have been using the door by the slope this week. We are trialling using this door as the entrance door by the cloakroom is quite narrow and our cloakroom can be busy at the start of the day. Thank you for your support.
As the weather becomes wet and cold please ensure that your child has a waterproof coat in school every day. Also, if hats and gloves come into school, please ensure that they are named. I do encourage the children to put their sweatshirts/cardigans in their drawer and will do the same with hats and gloves (as our cloak room can become very busy) but inevitably sometimes little items go astray so naming them helps. Thank you.
Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TAs, Miss Smith and Miss Lloyd.
Wishing you all a very happy and cosy weekend.
