What a fun week, Dragonflies have had continuing the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We looked at different versions of the story and compared the similarities and differences. We enjoyed reading ‘Keep on running Gingerbread Man’ in this story the animals were too slow to catch the gingerbread man except fox. The fox then trained the other animals to be fitter. The children explored healthy and unhealthy foods following on from the story. On Friday, the children had a big surprise…a gingerbread man had escaped from the oven in the role-play area and it was captured on video. The gingerbread man had left us some clues were to find him but we were too slow so had to make our very own gingerbread people instead. We also did an experiment with small gingerbread biscuits. We explored what happened when we placed the gingerbread person in a puddle of oil, juice, water or vinegar and compared the results of what happened to the biscuit.

We read the story, ‘How to trap a Gingerbread Man’ to set traps in case the gingerbread man got away when we baked them. The children had great fun working collaboratively on traps that would catch the gingerbread men. In addition to setting traps we explored what we could build to help the gingerbread man cross the river. We had lots of great ideas such as boats, jet packs and bridges. The children set about making these in the construction area.

In our PE sessions, the children are enjoying exploring the apparatus to help them develop their gross motor skills. The children this week were focusing on balancing and jumping in different ways from the equipment. Sometimes there were a few wobbles on landing and we are working on perfecting our jumps at the end.

Dragonflies Gym Week 2

In our maths sessions, we have looked at the composition of numbers up to five. We are beginning to know our number bonds to five by heart. The children investigated with the numicon to see what numbers hide in 5. We then used the song ‘five little speckled frogs’ as inspiration for working out how many were in the pond and how many were on the log. The children were able to show this using their double-sided counters and five frames.  We have enjoyed playing a game to support our understanding of this were the children worked in pairs. One of the children took five counters whilst the other child closed their eyes. The child with the counters hid some behind their back and held some out in front of them. The child who had their eyes closed had to say how many counters they could see and how many were hidden. Perhaps this is a game you could play at home with five objects.

Dragonflies Maths 20th Jan

The children are enjoying their RWI sessions and are really beginning to recognise their sounds at speed as well as begin to read some words. The children should know all their set 1 sounds and set 1 special friends by the end of the spring term. If you would like to support your child’s phonic knowledge then please check out the RWI blog:
