Friday 11th November

This week we had an amazing start to our topic ‘If you go down to the woods today’. We went on a visit to Moors Valley and the children loved finding all the characters from the Gruffalo. The children had the opportunity to enjoy the natural climbing challenges set about a play trail and discover some of the features of a woodland. Pine cones seemed to be the treasure of the day and children enjoyed collecting these. It was a lovely Autumn Day to go exploring in the woodlands – Take a look at some of our photos from the day.

The children are working hard in their phonic groups and lots of children are developing their blending skills to begin to read words. If you would like to support your child with their phonic knowledge then please check out the RWI blog.

In our Maths sessions this week, we have been exploring the number ‘Five.’ The children created collections of five objects or found ways to represent five for example by using two dice that showed two and three. The children designed some fantastic posters showing representations of five. We also explored the composition of five using five green speckled frogs.  In our small group maths session, we played a game called, ‘Shake and Spill’. The children used their subitising skills to see how many objects spilled out of the cup. We looked at the arrangements of how the objects fell and talked about the groups we could see.

On Friday, we talked about the significance of Armistice Day. The children discovered why people wear poppies and had the opportunity to create their own. We paused our activities for two minutes at 11 o’clock to pay our respect.
