Butterflies and Boats
This week we started by learning facts about the life cycle of a butterfly. We also researched facts about butterflies that we didn’t know. Did you know that butterflies don’t have eyelids! The children have really enjoyed observing our caterpillars change to Butterflies. We released them on Wednesday in the forest school area and the children watched with joy as they flew off into the sky. The butterflies inspired our art work this week as the children created life cycle plates and paper plate butterflies.

In our maths learning this week, we revisited our understanding of patterns. The children enjoyed listening to the story Pattern Fish and Learning about different patterns. We focused on ABBC patterns using movement and objects. The children worked in pairs to create patterns that the rest of the class could copy. At the end of the week we started to look at Cuisenaire rods and the value of these. The children were set the challenge to order them and talk about the numerical value they represented. We then started to look at what smaller rods could fit above a larger Cuisenaire rod.

At the end of the week, we started to look at boats and how these have changed through time. We looked at the different type of boats and discussed which ones we would like to go on and why. The children also thought about how the boat was powered. The children got the opportunity to create their own sailboat using lollipop sticks.
This week we started to asses the children’s phonic knowledge and they have all made so much progress. If you would like to support the children with their RWI skills then check out the blog:
