  • Friday 21 July 2023 Super Sports Day and Terrific Tangrams Hooray! Sports day got to go ahead on our second attempt and the rain held off. The children had lots of fun cheering each other on, taking part in races and learning about showing great sportsmanship. Only one person can ever win a race but its important to give everyone a chance to shine and to learn how to be gracious in defeat. Well done Butterfly class you were amazing and showed great determination, resilience, perseverance and great team spirit.
  • Friday 14 July 2023 Fire Fire! Rain Rain! This week Butterfly class excelled themselves with their amazing writing about the Great Fire of London, followed by creating wonderful pictures to illustrate it using pastels, brusho and cutting out silhouettes of the buildings. They completed their art work by adding flames effects which moved by using a lever or slider. They should be very proud of what they have achieved.
  • Tuesday 11 July 2023 Fire of London The children have really enjoyed our topic about the Fire of London. This week we finished with our mind maps explaining everything we had learnt about it. These are going to be displayed on the wall so hopefully you will be able to see them when you join us for our exciting parent event at the end of the term.

  • Friday 23 June 2023 Lovely learning at Lacock We have had a great week this week starting our new history topic on the Great Fire of London in 1666. We especially enjoyed our trip to Lacock where we looked at the different buildings, what materials were used to build them and similarities and differences between them and those we live in today. Lots of the houses were built using timber frames and the Abbey itself is over 800 years old crafted from stone. The children especially enjoyed looking at the cloister in the abbey which was used to film several scenes in the Harry Potter movies. Lots of fun learning took place in a very historic village full of old worldy charm.
  • Wednesday 21 June 2023 Colourful colour run Butterfly class with Glow worms and Ladybirds took part in our school colour run last Friday. It was a beautifully sunny day but the children were determined to run 10 laps of the trim trial. We had lots of water on hand, plenty of rests and shade and had a fun time. Well done Year 1 for a great determined attitude and showing amazing resilience. You should feel very proud.
  • Monday 12 June 2023 Scientists We have been learning all about different materials in our topic so far this term. We have been exploring materials and feeling them talking about their different properties and why certain things are made of these materials. Today we were able to carry out an experiment using the water outside. We had to find out which material would be best to make an umbrella for Teddy. We predicted which material would be best and then tested each one. Maybe the children can tell you what we found out. Enjoy looking at the pictures.

  • Friday 9 June 2023 Grand Galleries for our Glorious Grandparents Welcome back Butterflies. We have had a wonderful week of learning all about money, materials and their properties. The children have been learning to recognise and understand the value of each coin as well as the different notes that we use. In our science lessons we have been finding out about the names of materials and their properties. Is it waterproof or absorbent Can it bend or is it rigid Is it shiny or dull The children were then able to apply their new knowledge at our wonderful Grandparent event this afternoon. The children had lots of fun finding different properties of materials to use to decorate Elmer the patchwork elephant with. They were then able to take their Grandparents into the hall to enjoy looking around our grand gallery of beautiful pictures, created by the children. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH to all of the grandparents or parents who were able to support us today. I know how much the children appreciated you coming to share in their learning and we enjoyed the pleas
  • Friday 26 May 2023 Optimistic orienteering and perceptive post code cracking! The children have been working really hard this week to give and follow directions in Geography, using left and right, forwards and backwards, half and quarter turns and learning about the 4 points of the compass. Our topic was completed on Thursday afternoon with our exciting parent event. We were so grateful for all of the support shown by the parents/careers who attended and I know how much the children appreciated you being there so THANK YOU!! We had lots of fun, beginning with an orienteering activity on the trim trail. Our optimism for a dry and sunny afternoon was not miss placed. We had a set of directions to follow which would lead to different letters hidden around the trim trail. Once all of the letters were collected it would spell a word associated with our topic. It was aerial as in an aerial view. Then we had 2 other activities, one where the children could draw and name 4 places we saw on our local walk last week, and our final activity cracking the post codes. We used
  • Wednesday 17 May 2023 Westbury Walk Today the children went on a walk around Westbury. Thank you so much to the volunteers for coming with us, without you we really could not do such things. The children had a great time following the map and locating human features on our route. We discovered it was quite tricky to follow the map and work out where we were. We will practise this more back in class. The children went home exhausted but full of information about what we saw so hopefully they can tell you something interesting.
  • Wednesday 10 May 2023 sharing This week we have been learning to share amounts into equal groups. We did this practically using different resources and spent a lot of time outside finding different things that we could sort. We drew big circles on the floor outside to represent our groups and then found different amounts of objects to put into equal groups. We found that some numbers could be grouped in lots of different ways.
  • Friday 5 May 2023 Coronation Celebration We have had an amazing week this week in Butterfly class. We have started our new topic, learning about the area we live in, as well as human and physical features.
  • Friday 28 April 2023 Super sporting stars What a super week its been in Butterfly class. The children have been learning about repeated addition, counting in equal groups and trying to show their understanding by using arrays in maths.
  • Friday 21 April 2023 Spring Sunshine and wonderful weather reports It has been lovely to see Butterflies come back with such super attitudes to learning. This week we have been thinking about how the weather has changed now that it is Spring and we created a pictogram to show how the length of day changes according to each season. We have also been finding out how animals adapt to the different seasons; bears, hedgehogs, door mice and bees come out of hibernation. Lots of animals have their babies in Spring when the weather starts to get warmer and there is more food available to feed them with. The Children enjoyed presenting their own weather forecast and I think we have some great presenters in the making.
  • Friday 31 March 2023 Easter celebrations and New Life! This week Butterfly class have been preparing for our Easter egg hunt. They carefully coloured in their Easter eggs ready to find them hidden around the trim trail. And if they were clever enough to find them they could give them to the Easter bunny who would exchange it for a delicious chocolate egg! They have also been busy at home decorating eggs for our Easter egg competition. I thought I would share with you their wonderful creations, all unique and special in their own way.
  • Wednesday 22 March 2023 Musical Instruments This week we have been designing and creating our own musical instruments. We used lots of recycling materials from boxes, cartons, pots, string and wool to create our instruments.
  • Wednesday 15 March 2023 Warminster Park Trip We had a great trip to Warminster Park this week. The children loved going on the train and looking through the window at the passing scenery. Once we arrived at the park we were met by the Park Keeper who showed us how to scatter the wild seeds in the flower beds. There were lots of seeds in the mixture and we all got a chance to scatter some seeds before he then raked it over. If you go to the mark in the summer you will have to look out for our beautiful wild seed flower boarder. We then did some observational drawing s in the park and played a scavenger hunt game. in their groups the children had to take a picture of the tallest tree, a shiny leaf, a spiky plant and stretch their arms around the biggest trunk.
  • Friday 10 March 2023 Marvelous measuring mathematicians! This week in butterfly class we have had lots of fun learning about measuring. We have been thinking about the language we use when we measure the length or height of an object; how we can compare 2 things saying one is taller or tallest, shorter or shortest, longer or longest. On Wednesday we had an unexpected snow day where some children were able to use the language of measure to compare the height of their snowman to themselves! We have then continued thinking about measuring and tested out non standard units to measure with such as pencils, lolly sticks, paper clips, our feet or hands and cubes. The children measured lots of different objects around the classroom and soon realised that if we measure in different units we get different answers so we need to use a ruler to measure with. If you have a ruler at home you could practice measuring the length or height or different items around you. Remember to only start measuring from the 0 and not the end of the ruler!

  • Friday 3 March 2023 World Book Day Words We had a fantastic day yesterday dressing up not in a costume of a character from a book but by bringing the words used in these books to life instead. We had a great collection of words and here's a challenge. How many of the words can you use to make a really interesting sentence
  • Tuesday 21 February 2023 What inspires you? This week we started our new topic all about Georgia O'Keeffe. The children have found it really interesting learning about the famous American artist and I have been really impressed with the work that has been bought in from home. Today we thought about what inspired Georgia O'Keeffe to create her art work. We then went outside to see what would inspire us. We talked about how to hold the pencil to create different effects as we sketch. We used light and dark strokes and tried really hard to focus on the details in the objects we found inspired us.
  • Friday 10 February 2023 Friday 10th February This week has been a super exciting week in Butterfly class beginning with our amazing parent event. • Friday 27 January 2023 Friday 27th January This week we have begun our new topic all about "Where in the UK do these traditional treats come from" Following on from our topic about the 4 countries of the UK, we begun baking a traditional recipe from each of the 4 nations. Earlier in the week after learning about what a recipe is and how it has a set of instructions that must be followed in order, we then enjoyed baking English Scones. The children enjoyed weighing, mixing, rolling and cutting before finally eating! Towards the end of the week we then learnt how to bake Scottish shortbread but this time the children took responsibility for getting all of the equipment they needed and the ingredients together before baking. What great team work the children showed and what tasty shortbread they made. Well done Butterflies. What super cooks you all are and maybe one day we will see you on the Great British Bake off!
